Star forward Nathan MacKinnon has returned after missing nearly all of December with an upper body injury. MacKinnon led the Avs with 34 points before getting hurt against the Flyers in early December.

The Avs made MacKinnon the league’s highest-paid player with an eight-year contract worth $100.8 million before the season started. Captain Gabriel Landeskog had knee surgery in October, and the Avs have been without his services the entire season.  

Carolina Hurricanes (+800)

Carolina was leading the Metropolitan Division with a record of 25-9-7 as of this writing. Center Martin Necas has been a force for the Hurricanes. Necas led the Canes with 39 points and 142 shots on goal at the midway mark of the regular season.

Right wing Andrei Svechnikov was Carolina’s top sniper with 19 goals. Ageless defenseman Brent Burns had made an immediate impact after being traded from San Jose in the offseason. Burns leads the Canes in assists (23) and penalty minutes (32).  

Vegas Golden Knights (+900)

Goaltender Logan Thompson has been a welcome surprise for the Knights after Robin Lehner missed the entire season due to hip surgery.

Thompson is among the leading candidates to capture this year’s Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie. Thompson (+600) was the third betting favorite at DraftKings as of this update. He’s 18-10-1 with a 2.66 goals against average and two shutouts halfway through the regular season.

Toronto Maple Leafs (+1000)

The Maple Leafs were the NHL’s third-best team at the midway point of the regular season. Mitchell Marner has been on a heater for Toronto. The 25-year-old right wing has a team-high 50 points. Marner also amassed a 23-game point streak, the longest in Toronto’s franchise history. 

The goaltending duo of Ilya Samsonov and Matt Murray has performed better than expected for Toronto, which is seeking its first Stanley Cup since 1967. Murray came over from Ottawa in the offseason, but suffered a groin injury after appearing in only one game.

Murray (11-4-2) and Samsonov (12-3-1) have effectively split their starts and helped Toronto to remain among the NHL’s Stanley Cup contenders this season.
