Hey, Michigan bettors, the PGA Tour is about to shine its spotlight on you. Are you ready?
The Tour will stop in Detroit on July 1-4, 2021, for the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club. And lest you think it might not be one of the Tour’s high-profile, big-name player events, think again.
Bryson DeChambeau, Bubba Watson, Patrick Reed, Jason Day and a host of other Tour stars are already signed up and set to bring the glitz and glamour of the Tour to town. That means you guys will get double the fireworks over the July 4 weekend.
This will be the third time the event will be played at Detroit Golf Club with DeChambeau, the 2020 winner, coming in as the defending champ. In the inaugural event in 2019, Nate Lashley won for the first…and so far, only…time in his PGA Tour career.
The tournament will be one of those where anyone can win. DeChambeau and Lashley prove that point. DeChambeau is at the top of his game while Lashley is still trying to lift his status.
As of this writing, a limited number of fans will be allowed on the course. Between the rush for tickets and the event being televised, golf fans will have plenty of chances to get the word out on social media about this event that will spotlight all Detroit and Michigan have to offer both on and off the golf course.
And if you’re a golf fan, a PGA Tour fan and are reading this story on MichiganSharp.com, you’ve now got the chance to bet a couple of dollars on the event. Places like FanDuel have opened their doors (and betting website) to Michigan fans. Simply check out the sportsbook options on this site to sign up. Or, if you’re in the Detroit area or visiting, FanDuel has a sportsbook in the MotorCity Casino.
This One’s Right Between Two Majors
But, back to the action. With many of the big names coming to town, fans need to remember this event comes between two of the majors. The US Open will have ended on June 20 and the Open Championship, being held at Royal St. Georges in England, will be played July 15-18.
That makes this tournament a toss-up and leaves us with a couple of questions. Will players take a little time off after one major and before another? With the FedEx Cup points race winding down, will players tee it up as often as humanly possible to get into the top 125 (or higher)?
No matter which road players take, here’s one hint: Check out the 2019 results at the Rocket Mortgage. If a player had a solid finish in 2019 and is trending in a positive direction right now, he’s worth a look.
The Big Names Will Get The Big Bets
Guys like DeChambeau, Watson, and others with star-power are going to attract the bigger share of wagers. And that’s especially true for bettors who may be new to wagering in general and golf betting specifically. Here’s where doing that research will help when it comes to deciding who to back.
And it can also come down to who needs to win more.
If a guy like DeChambeau gets off to a bad start, he’s more likely to start looking ahead and trying to work on shots he may need for his next start. He has his eyes on the bigger picture.
A player who is looking for that first win is more likely to scratch his way around the course no matter the circumstances. He may need that big finish–let alone a win–to keep his card and play another year.
The Bottom Line: It’s Momentum
The betting numbers aren’t out yet but in the end it’s going to come down to a simple fact: Who is playing well the week or weeks before the Rocket Mortgage event?
Keep an eye on the events leading up to this holiday extravaganza and bet accordingly. If a favorite is playing well, don’t be afraid to bet him even though the payout won’t be as large. And if a longshot player is having a solid couple of weeks, putting down a couple of bucks on him to win could result in a nice payday.
Along those same lines, if bettors are looking to be a little more cautious, keep in mind many sportsbooks have odds for a player to finish in the top-3, the top-5, the top-10, the top-20, etc. With these bets, your player doesn’t have to win the event, he just needs to have a solid week to ensure you have a solid week with your betting as well.
