Welcome back into our lives Michigan State basketball. Perhaps the most fun amateur sporting season begins on Tuesday when coach Tom Izzo and Spartans will take on the No. 3-ranked team in the country Kansas as part of the Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The Kansas Jayhawks had a slightly disappointing season in 2020-21. They made it to the NCAA Tournament but were defeated by Southern California in the round of 32. Conversely, Michigan State was beaten by UCLA in the “First-Four” round.
The disappointing results for Michigan State are not common for Izzo’s bunch. Michigan State has made the March Madness tournament 23 consecutive seasons. During that time, the Spartans have won two national championships and 16 Big Ten titles. Michigan State received the most votes among teams that were not in the top 25 of the Associated Press and Coaches preseason rankings, essentially meaning the Spartans are No. 26 in the country as the season begins.
Below I preview Tuesday night’s Kansas vs. Michigan State matchup and betting odds. If you haven’t signed up for a sports betting account in Michigan, you have plenty of options for sportsbooks and the Michigan sports betting bonus offers that come with them.
Michigan State Vs. Kansas Betting Odds
|Kansas -4.5 -110||Kansas: -225||Over: 142 -118|
|Michigan State +4.5 -110||Michigan State: +175||Under: 142 +100|
Oddsmakers are certainly backing the Jayhawks. They are a “new-look” team. Coach Bill Self added eight new scholarship players this season and is hoping to become more athletic.
The talent that the Kansas roster poses is a clear edge for the Jayhawks in this game. However, their continuity and chemistry will be tested by Izzo’s boys. Michigan State lost its top scorer, Aaron Henry, to the NBA.
Michigan State did its best to bring in talent to get its offense moving more efficiently. Certainly, it helps that the Spartans are adding Northeastern point guard Tyson Walker to the fold. Moreover, Izzo had a full offseason and training camp to get this team prepared. This was a major disadvantage for the team last season with different protocols due to COVID-19.
I will back Michigan State. The Spartans’ defense is one that can create fits for teams that are not working as a collective unit. Moreover, the game is going to take place at Madison Square Garden. The ability to get stops and win games with their defense is important in big venue games like this. I am expecting the new point guard to get the ball to their big men at will.
Betting Pick: Michigan State ML +175
