Continuing its efforts to back responsible gaming, DraftKings has announced that it will pledge an undisclosed amount to finance a research fund for the International Center for Responsible Gaming (ICRG), with a focus on issues of problem gambling.
The Fund to Support Research on Sports Wagering will:
- Differences in sports wagering compared to other forms of gaming
- Evaluation of efficacy of existing responsible gaming interventions and programs
- Differences in prevalence and experience of problem gambling across demographics
The new initiative by the ICRG will accept applications from researchers globally who are seeking to do studies on gambling and its impact on people and society.
Formerly known as the National Center for Responsible Gambling, the International Center for Responsible Gaming is a U.S.-based nonprofit group established in 1996 that funds scientific research on gambling addiction.
With the assistance from DraftKings, the new research fund will be the first of its kind in the United States to comprehensively and scientifically study responsible gaming.
“With the expansion of sports betting across the United States, public health research will be critical in better understanding problem gaming, and we are deeply appreciative of the support from DraftKings to fund research that is cutting-edge and can be utilized across the industry and by consumers,” says Dr. Russell Sanna, ICRG Executive Director.
DraftKings And Responsible Gaming Practices
The commitment to the The Fund to Support Research on Sports Wagering by DraftKings is the most recent in many efforts by the company to be a responsible member of the gaming industry.
Originating in Boston, DraftKings Inc. provides digital sports entertainment and gaming products. Their sportsbook operates in 14 states, and their fantasy sports products are in several countries. A leader in the gaming industry, DraftKings is the official daily fantasy partner of MLB, NASCAR, NFL, the PGA Tour, and serves as an authorized gaming operator of the NBA and MLB.
DraftKings has a strong, comprehensive approach to responsible gaming. The company promotes responsible gambling by providing resources to those who feel they may have a gambling problem. This also includes using technology and verification programs to prevent underage gambling.
All employees of DraftKings are required to take responsible gaming training, and employees are regularly updated on the company’s policies and any changes in laws regarding the issue.
DraftKings offers services so gamblers can set their own wagering limits, establish cool-off periods, or opt-in for self-exclusion, which prevents consumers from being able to wager online with DraftKings or at a DraftKings operated retail location.
According to their responsibility pledge on their website, DraftKings “will make information available promoting responsible gaming and will provide assistance and resources including a national toll-free helpline number.”
