Sports Betting and Online Betting Not Yet Available
The Michigan government legalized sports betting, online sports betting, daily fantasy games, and online gambling in late 2019. These changes pave the way for casinos to expand their services for players, especially for those who couldn’t make it into the casino to play.
Retail sports betting was made available to the public at most Michigan casinos in March 2020. However, the Michigan Gaming Control Board is currently working on the regulations for online sports betting and gaming. But, the Board estimates that they will have the rules in place for online gambling and sports betting to be available to gamblers by early 2021.
As of early 2020, the Sault Tribe hasn’t made any public announcements regarding sports betting or online gambling. It’s not known when or if they will offer these gaming opportunities to customers.
Kewadin St. Ignace Casino History
The original Kewadin St. Ignace Casino first opened in 1987 on the Northern Shores of Lake Huron. This casino slowly expanded over the following 20 years until the facilities were too old and maze-like for comfortable use. The Sault Tribe opted to build a new casino next to the first Kewadin Casino starting around 2003.
The new casino was completed in 2006, but couldn’t start operating right away due to legal complications. Basically, part of the casino was built on lands where gaming might not be allowed. In 2007, the Sault Tribe received an injunction that permitted them to operate fully while a lawsuit wound its way through the courts. By 2009, the US Federal Courts ruled in favor of the Sault Tribe and they were free to operate their casino without fear of further legal challenges.
