Cincinnati Bengals at Kansas City Chiefs

CIN Bengals vs KC Chiefs Moneyline Point Spread Total Points

KC Chiefs -1000 -2.5 (-120) U 43.5 (-125)

It’s rematch time in the AFC title game. We get the feeling Patrick Mahomes II and Joe Burrow are going to battle each other for supremacy in the conference for years. Last season, Burrow guided his Bengals to an OT win in the AFC Championship.

Let’s not take this matchup for granted. In the 1980s folks thought John Elway and Dan Marino would square off frequently with their big arms in the AFC for years. Instead, those future Hall of Famers only met in the NFL Playoffs once.

Mahomes assured his fans (and maybe even himself) that his injured ankle is fine this week. But, given his roaming pocket style of play, it’s something to be concerned with. The NFL added a 17th game in 2021 for one reason: money. But, these injuries the type that come to marquee players after a grueling regular season underscore how much abuse pro football players place on their bodies. Mahomes might say “it’s all good,” but don’t be surprised if he limps at some point on Sunday.

Michigan Sportsbooks have this game as basically a pick-em. Maybe that’s due to the uncertainty of Mahomes’ health, but it’s also because Burrow has a much better defense on his side.

The Chiefs lost to the Bengals on the road in December, by the same score they were beaten in the 2022 AFC Championship Game: 27-24. It was Burrow’s fifth career fourth-quarter comeback, and his second game-winning drive against the Chiefs.

Burrow has already accumulated a number of nicknames: “Joe Burr” and “Joe Cool,” most notably. If he leads his team to another win over Mahomes, he may earn the label “KC Killer.”

FanDuel and other oddsmakers have the Eagles as slight favorites at home. But, in order for Philadelphia to defeat the 49ers, they’ll need to solve a wall of defense that they will face on Sunday.

Led by QB Jalen Hurts, the Eagles scored 28.1 points per game this season, and ranked second in the league in offensive yardage, behind only the Chiefs.

But what happens when Hurts & Co. face a top defense? Recent history has not been favorable:

  • The Eagles faced a top-five defense three times in the last two seasons. They went 1-2 in those games, including a 17-11 defeat to the 49ers last season. In those matchups against the best defensive units in the NFL since the start of the 2021-22 season, Philly has managed 18.6 PPG.
  • Philadelphia has lost its last three games against defenses ranked in the top 10in the NFL: New Orleans once and Dallas twice.

The 49ers led the NFL in the fewest points allowed and were especially stingy against the run. San Francisco opponents made 77 first downs on the ground, which was 13 fewer than any other team.

The Eagles out-rushed opponents by almost 500 yards in the regular season. They were fifth in rushing yardage and second in first downs gained by running the football.

Something will have to give on Sunday when the Eagles try to run the football. In their win over the Giants in the Divisional Round, Philly ran for 268 yards. That simply won’t happen against the 49ers.

The Eagles will have to either physically overpower the NFL’s best run defense, or ask Hurts to win the game through the air.

The oddsmakers are handing out 2-3 points to get bettors to hop on the 49ers. Perhaps due to the inexperience of rookie quarterback Brock Purdy, the line favors the Eagles.

But a couple of points with that defense, coupled with the Eagles’ difficulties beating physical, talented defenses, makes the 49ers against the spread a good bet.
